Objective: Students learn about how creative ways can be developed to recycle common everyday objects that might otherwise be sent to landfills.

Before introducing this art project discuss with students the importance of recycling and have them contribute ideas for a list of items that are commonly recycled. Have them think about how other items that are not typically reused somehow might be recycled rather than put in landfills. Ask them to think about how they might recycle their used pencils and then introduce this project.

This is an art project that allows you to recycle used pencils by gluing them together end to end and side to side to a wooden backing board. Backing board can be any standard size you wish depending upon the Trim the pencils off around the edge of the backing board.

The pencils provide an interesting surface texture to which you can glue additional objects to create a type of sculpture. You can use pencils with erasers and ferules still attached, both round and hexagonal pencils, broken or chewed up pencils also add additional texture to your background.

Students can pick a theme for thier pencil boards and collect objects from home that to be glued on to create their sculpture board. Keep with the theme of recycling objects that might otherwise be thrown away such as old or broken toys, various plastic or metal objects such as pens, mechanical pencils, bottle caps, etc.

Use acrylic paint to paint over the pencils and glued on sculptures with a variety of colors.

Attach eye hooks and wire for hanging pencil art boards on the wall.
