- aquarelle
- a drawing usually in transparent water color
- chain of custody
- The connected linkage of manufacturers from the forest through to the finished manufactured wood product.
- chain of custody certification
- The process of certifying that wood from a certified forest has been properly segregated from non-certified wood through the chain of manufacturers into the finished product
- Chinese Basswood
- Family temperate hardwood trees with the genus name Tilia commonly used in China for pencil making
- collage
- A work of art made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. A collage may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork, photographs, and such, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.
- cosmetic pencils
- Pencils used for make-up purposes generally as eye and lip liners.
- Eastern Red Cedar
- Species of eastern cedar tree used for pencil manufacturing in the US during 19th and early 20th centuries
- forest certification
- A proceedure in which a forest is evaluated by an independent third party to determine if it is well managed on a sustained-yield and sound environmental basis.
- FSC
- Forest Stewardship Council, an independent membership based organization promoting responsible forest management practices
- FSC certification
- Forest certification according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council.
- Genuine Incense Cedar
- Trademark indicating pencils are made from real Incense-cedar grown on a sustained-yield basis in the forests of California & Oregon
- Gouache
- A type of paint consisting of pigment suspended in water. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present.
- graphite
- Carbon based mineral used in pencil leads to make the dark mark on paper.
- Incense-cedar
- Species of tree growing in California and Oregon preferred for pencils due to its superior technical characteristics
- jelutong
- Species of tropical hardwood growing in Indonesia and Malaysia
- moleskine
- a brand of notebook commonly used for notekeeping and creative journals, said to have been used by Hemingway and other artist.
- pencil blocks
- Pencil square lumber that has been cut to 7-1/4" length to be further sawn into pencil slats.
- Pencil Slat
- Wooden blank used to produce a pencil sandwich by grooving, adding pencil leads and gluing together
- pencil stock
- Lumber from which pencil blocks and then pencil slats are cut.
- PMA Seal
- Pencil Makers Association seal of product safety & non-toxicity for pencils. Administered by the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association.
- pulai
- A tropical timber growing in Indonesia used for making pencils
- sustained-yield
- A condition where the harvest level of trees does not exceed the growth rate of new trees over time.
- sustained-yield forest
- A forest that is managed on a sustained-yield basis with harvest and growth rates in balance
