Frank Lloyd Wright

Architectural expression in pencil

Frank Lloyd Wright was perhaps the 20th Century's most famous architect.

Frank Lloyd Wright was born in 1867 and passed away in 1959. He lived a long and fulfilled life that included drawing, designing, writing, and educating. Wright spent more than 70 years revolutionizing art and architecture of the twentieth century. He designed 1,141 works that included - houses, offices, churches, schools, libraries, bridges, museums and several other building styles. All of these designs began with the work of his mind and a pencil. 532 of his designs resulted in completed works and 409 of his buildings continue to stand today. By many, Wright is considered to be the greatest architect of the 20th Century. The picture shown has all of the pencils that were on Frank Lloyd Wright’s desk at the time of his death. I would have to say that Wright was quite the pencil fanatic!

A majority of Wright’s works were in the architectural field; however, he was a prolific writer, educator, and philosopher as well. He wrote twenty books and numerous articles. These writings have been taught throughout the United States and Europe.

“An architect's most useful tools are an eraser at the drafting board and a wrecking bar at the site.” –Frank Lloyd Wright
