Pencil Artist of the Week: Rob Hassan (GraphixRob)
This week’s featured pencil artist is Rob Hassan, a freelance artist and pencil artist living in the Chicago area who goes by the handle “GraphixRob.” Rob is an artist who is skilled in a number of different art forms, as the brief biography below can attest, but it was his skill as a pencil artist that caught our interest.
“For all practical purposes, Rob is a self-taught artist. He has attended many traditional drawing and painting classes over the years, with the pinnacle being at the School of Visual Arts (NYC). Most recently he has focused on his computer graphics art education and has incorporated several 2D and 3D software programs into his traditional workflow.
Rob’s artistic experience includes but, is not limited to:
Rob’s inspirations are drawn from many sources, including various CG artists, modern fantasy painters, science fiction/superhero movies, classic Universal monsters, contemporary art, and comic book art.
Many of Rob’s Science Fiction, Comic Art and Fantasy creations are held in personal collections and have also been featured on websites, in books, comics, magazines and DVD covers.
His artwork has been displayed in Chicago galleries and has received art awards in Chicago, Hollywood, London, Brisbane Australia, and Trieste Italy.”
The works Rob shared with us feature comic book and pop-culture icons recreated in graphite form. His drawings are very detail oriented, with some of his drawings focused squarely on one feature of a subject. One such drawing depicts two pairs of eyes and nothing more, but the depiction is so accurate, viewers can immediately tell that the eyes belong to John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
